Your first Linux commands

Hi!

Welcome to this introductory free course about the Linux command line. I’m excited to have you here as I will teach you how to work on the Linux command line. You will run commands to achieve tasks in the Linux operating system. You will also get a grasp of how Linux works, with the design using a kernel and an operating system on top of that.

Why learn Linux?

Linux is used in many IT professions that relate to the Internet, development, and networking. Linux command line skills are useful if you want to work within web development, systems administration, data analysis to mention a few fields. Also, Linux as an operating system is a highly attractive skill for employers. In addition to this, it’s also plenty of fun to work with as the operating system is open source and you have total control over it. The truth is that Linux is used throughout the IT industry.

What you will learn

At the end of this course you will know how to:

  • How to move around in the filesystem and the logic behind the Linux filesystem architecture
  • How to list running programs (processes) and view information about them.
  • How to list, create and modify files.
  • How to locate your home directory and see the content in it.
  • How to check network connectivity.

As you can see, we focus on three core areas:

  • The files.
  • The processes.
  • And the network.

Teaching based on industry experience as a Linux engineer

I have worked on and off with Linux over the past two decades. Sometimes I barely touched it as I was working in related computing fields (web development, the world of Windows, etc.), but I kept coming back to Linux over the years. Moreover, I have seen the effect it has when one does not practice regularly on the commandline. And that’s why I believe in learning by doing. And that’s exactly what you will be doing in this course!

Anyone can learn!

This course doesn’t require you to be a highly skilled engineer or IT professional. Instead we start out at the simplest of places, the command line prompt.
